The distributed ledger of the blockchain records all the events that take place on the network. A new record is only added by members if consensus is reached over its validity. In addition, the information recorded to a blockchain is append-only, using hash based cryptographic methods that guarantee that once an event has been added to the ledger it cannot be modified. 

The network uses public key infrastructure (PKI) to facilitate secure access via Membership Service Providers. MSPs issue and validate certificates and provide user authentication. With a separate MSP for each party this provides modularity of membership operations. PKI is also used to encrypt client records prior to their addition to the blockchain.

The modular architecture of Hyperledger Fabric permits much higher transaction volumes than other blockchain technologies. By separating the acts of endorsing, ordering and committing transactions to the blockchain, the processing burden placed upon any one node in the network is reduced.

Once an application is authenticated via a local MSP it can begin committing records to the network. Compliance record producers send information to a middleware bus for subsequent inclusion on the blockchain. The publish/subscribe message queue architecture of the bus provides a uniform platform for handling high throughput data feeds.
